How to use

A short walkthrough from first visit to finished result.

  1. Step 1: Open the tool you need

Every tool has its own page, listed on the tools page and reachable from the menu. The formatter and the validator share an engine but answer different questions: one prints your document, the other tells you what is wrong with it.

  2. Step 2: Paste your JSON

Paste into the editor, or press Load sample to try the tool on a document chosen to show what it does. Very large documents lose syntax colouring so that typing stays smooth, and every tool keeps working.

  3. Step 3: Read the result

The banner above the editor says what happened. An error names the mistake and marks the failing line in the gutter. A warning means the document is valid but something in it is probably not what you meant, a duplicate key being the usual case.

  4. Step 4: Copy, download or point at it

Copy the result, download it as a file, or copy the path of a single value from the viewer or the JSONPath tester and paste it into your own code.

Tips

Three things catch people out. A trailing comma is valid JavaScript and invalid JSON, which is what the repair tool is for. A duplicate key is valid JSON that silently throws data away, and only the validator warns about it. And comparing two documents as text reports every reindented line, so use the diff tool, which compares the values instead.
