Escaping is what a document needs before it can live inside a string: a JSON value holding another JSON document, a log line, a shell argument, a fixture pasted into a test. The rules are short and all of them are here. The characters with a short escape get it, control characters that have no short form become a \u escape, and a forward slash is left alone, because JSON accepts \/ and nothing requires it. Optionally everything above ASCII becomes a \u escape as well, which is what you want when the text has to cross something that is not certainly UTF-8. Neither direction requires valid JSON, since escaping part of a document is an ordinary thing to want, and the page says separately whether the result happens to parse.

When do I need to escape JSON?

Whenever a document has to sit inside a string. The usual cases are a JSON value holding another JSON document, which happens constantly with message queues and webhook payloads, a fixture pasted into a test, an environment variable, and a log line that has to stay on one line. Escaping changes how the text is written and never what it says, so escaping and unescaping are safe to repeat as often as you like.

Should the forward slash be escaped?

It does not have to be. JSON accepts a slash written either way and both mean the same thing. The habit comes from putting JSON inside an HTML script tag, where a closing script tag appearing inside a string would end the element early, and escaping the slash prevents it. This tool leaves slashes alone when escaping and accepts either form when unescaping.

What does escaping above ASCII do?

It rewrites every character above the ASCII range as a \u escape, so cafe with an accent becomes caf\u00e9. The text means exactly the same thing, it just no longer depends on the file being read as UTF-8. That is worth doing when the string has to pass through something old or unknown, and not worth doing otherwise, since the escaped form is longer and harder to read. A character above the basic plane becomes a surrogate pair, because a \u escape carries exactly four hexadecimal digits.
